How to keep your vegetables fresh longer
Resolution
Seasonal fruit and vegetables are delicious, but keeping them fresh can be a challenge
How to keep asparagus fresh
Avoid letting asparagus dry out. Keep the rubber band on the bunch and trim about 1 inch off the ends. Stand the asparagus upright in a glass containing an inch or two of water and cover loosely with a plastic bag. They will stay crisp for up to 7 days.
How to keep avocado fresh
Avocados keep very well in the fridge as refrigeration halts the ripening process. Let avocados ripen on the counter and then use the fridge to preserve the ripeness. In a hurry? Put avocados in a paper bag to speed up ripening.
How to keep broccoli fresh
Broccoli is a cold weather crop and needs high levels of humidity so it is best stored in the vegetable drawer of your fridge with the humidity set to high. Do not store with fruits as broccoli spoils from the ethylene gas they produce.
How to keep salad fresh
Salad is also best kept in the vegetable drawer of your fridge with the humidity setting on high - this is the case for all leafy greens. If you don't have humidity controls - wash the lettuce, wrap it in paper towels and seal in a container.
How to use the humidity controls
Confused about the humidity controls in your vegetables drawer? There is a simple rule of thumb. Things that rot need a low humidity setting while things that wilt require high humidity. Keep fruit separate as they often spoil vegetables by producing ethylene gas.
