Resolution
Is your fridge compressor running all the time? Find out what this means and what you should check.
The compressor in a fridge or freezer normally runs in cycles and may operate for up to 45 minutes per hour.
Modern appliances with electronically controlled (inverter) compressors may run continuously, but at varying speeds depending on cooling needs.
This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction.
What you can check
1. Adjust the temperature settings
Make sure the appliance is not set too cold.
- Recommended settings:
- Fridge: 4°C
- Freezer: -18°C
These settings ensure optimal food preservation while minimising energy use.
2. Check that the door closes properly
- Ensure the door is fully closed
- Avoid leaving the door open for long periods
- Check for damaged or dirty door seals
3. Let hot food cool before storing
Placing warm food inside increases internal temperature and forces the compressor to run longer.
4. Check the room temperature
If the surrounding temperature is too high (above the appliance’s climate class), the compressor may run more frequently or continuously.
5. Ensure proper ventilation
Make sure there is adequate space around the appliance for airflow.
You can find ventilation requirements in the user manual or installation guide.
Download the user manual.
6. Contact an authorised service centre if:
- The appliance is not cooling properly
- The compressor is very noisy
- It runs continuously for long periods without stabilising
Cause
- The temperature is set incorrectly.
- Many food products were put in at the same time.
- Food products placed in the appliance were too warm.
- The room temperature is too high.
- The door is not closed correctly.
- The door has been opened too frequently.
