Error code E40 in dryers – what it means and how to fix it
Code E40 on a tumble dryer indicates a problem with the proper closure of the appliance door. The tumble dryer will not start until the door is correctly locked. Below you will find the most common causes of this error and proven steps that will help you resolve it.
Causes of the E40 error occurrence
1. Door not closed properly
Laundry can get stuck between the door and the rubber seal, preventing it from sealing properly. Sometimes it's enough to adjust the load and close the door until you hear a click.
2. Damaged or soiled door seal
The door seal may be dirty, worn, or cracked. Dirt and damage make it difficult to properly close the door, resulting in an E40 error.
3. Blocked or dirty door lock
The locking mechanism may be contaminated with dust, fibres, or other impurities. Damage to the lock also causes the door not to be properly secured.
4. Drum overload
Overloading the drum with laundry can put pressure on the door and seal, preventing them from closing properly.
5. Door lock mechanism fault
It's less common, but damage to the lock mechanism or door sensor is possible, which requires service intervention.
Step-by-step solutions for error E40
1. Check if the appliance door are properly closed
- Make sure the laundry isn't stuck between the machine door and the rubber seal.
- Remove laundry items that may obstruct the door from closing.
- Close the door until you hear a click.
2. Clean the door seal
- Clean the gasket with a soft, damp cloth and mild detergent, removing any dirt and fabric residues.
- If the gasket is damaged or worn, replace it with an original part.
3. Clean and lubricate the door lock
- Remove any dirt from the locking mechanism using compressed air or a soft brush.
- If possible, lubricate the mechanism with lock grease (e.g., food-grade lubricant).
4. Avoid overloading the drum
- Check if the load does not exceed the maximum recommended capacity.
- Overloading can deform the seal and cause the door to jam.
5. Reset the appliance
- Unplug the power cord from the electrical socket, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in (you can also use a circuit breaker).
- Turn on the dryer and select a programme.
- Resetting may remove electronic faults related to the door lock.
6. Contact an Authorised Service Centre.
If the above suggestions did not resolve the issue, we recommend requesting a visit from a service engineer.
Make a note of the reported error code and quote it when you request an engineer. This will not solve your problem, but it will help our engineer identify the cause of the problem.
