Defrosting of fridge / freezer
Issue
- How to defrost my freezer?
- When should I defrost?
- There is an ice build-up in my fridge/freezer
Applies to
- Freezer
- Fridge Freezer
Resolution
About 12 hours before defrosting, set a lower temperature to build up a sufficient chill reserve in case of any interruption in operation.
As an alternative, use the Frostmatic or FastFreeze function (if available).
Some frost will always form on the freezer shelves and the top compartment. Defrost the freezer when the frost layer is about 5-10 mm thick.
1. Remove any stored food, wrap it in several layers of newspaper, and put it in a cool place
2. Switch off the appliance or pull the electrical plug from the wall socket.
CAUTION! During defrosting, a temperature rise in frozen food packs may shorten their safe storage life. Do not touch frozen goods with wet hands. Hands can freeze to the goods.
3. Leave the door open. Protect the floor from the defrosting water, e.g., with a cloth or a flat vessel.
4. To speed up the defrosting process, place a pot of warm water in the freezer compartment. In addition, remove pieces of ice that break away before defrosting is complete.
5. When defrosting is complete, dry the interior thoroughly.
6. Switch on the appliance and close the door.
7. Set the temperature regulator to obtain the maximum coldness and run the appliance for two or three hours using this setting.
Only after this time, put the food back into the freezer compartment.
Warning: Never use any sharp tools to remove the ice.
Important: The defrosted food must be consumed quickly or cooked immediately and then refrozen (after cooling).
